Lot Essay

A tracing of this figure is at Montauban (G. Vigne, Dessins d'Ingres. Catalogue raisonné des dessins du musée de Montauban, Paris, 1995, no. 1172, p. 210). These drawings are connected with the figure of King Henri IV of France in an unrealised project for L'Encontre de Henri IV et Sully known through a series of studies at Mountauban. Another study of the same figure in reverse is in the same collection (G. Vigne, op. cit., no. 1173). The Duc de Sully (1559-1641) was one of the closest advisors to Henri IV and his minister of finance.
