Lot Essay

These drawings were originally part of two albums identified as the work of Soëhnée by the artist's signature which was found on a series of etchings of similar design. Executed in brush and brown wash in a technique not unlike Goya's, these drawings reveal the imagery of artists such as Bosch and Callot taken up by later, more popular artists. Drawings by Grandville also display a similarity of taste for fantastic subjects. The group can be dated to 1818-1819.
