CONTEMPORARY GERMAN BINDING, brown calf, the covers with a gilt frame border enclosing a central panel with a richly gilt design of flower and leaf tools on a hinged panel, when lifted the front with a gilt stamped red board panel opening on a blind-embossed image of Christ of gilt paper, the back with a hand-colored portrait of Christ and a quotation from St. Augustine on paper, spine in five compartments with four raised bands, gilt-decorated with star, leaf and dot designs, edges gilt, gauffred and colored, the upper and lower edges showing images of the four Evangelists, the fore-edge showing scenes from the flight into Egypt, the nativity and Christ on the Cross (some wear and rubbing, some restoration). Provenance: purchased from Lucien Goldschmidt, 11 October 1955.

A most unusual binding--we have been able to locate no other similar examples with movable flaps on the covers.
