GRATIANUS, the Canonist (d. ca 1150). Decreta sciptorum ecclesiastocorum, conciliorum, et romanorum pontificum. -Decreta les epistolae summorum pontificum. Lyons: Guillaume Rouille, 1554.

4 volumes, 16o in 8s (188 x 77 mm). Title to the first work in vol. 1, continuous pagination through vol. 3; separate title in vol. 4. Contemporary French calf, covers with single-gilt and blind rule borders, a central gilt arabesque at center of each cover, spines in four compartments with three raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, gilt and gauffred edges (some restoration at extremities, some pale staining and soiling). Provenance: Abbe Koenig (bookplates); purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 14 December 1953.

A handsome set of Gratianus's Decretum and a fine example of the popular series of pocket editions of classical texts issued by several Lyonese presses in the mid-sixteenth century. Like Jean I de Tournes, Rouille published a number of medical and legal texts in this small format, including several works of Galen. (4)
