235 x 180 mm. 162 leaves. Contents: title, portrait of Thomson, 13pp. life of Thomson, division title, 297pp. text of "The Seasons," 5pp. of "Hymn"; the title, portrait, section titles and each text leaf all within very finely drawn decorative borders. Contemporary red straight-grained morocco, covers with floral gilt border, smooth spine gilt-lettered and -decorated, edges gilt; red cloth slipcase. Provenance: purchased from Harry A. Levinson, 5 May 1953.

A stunning calligraphic manuscript of the complete text of Thomson's "The Seasons." Each leaf is meticulously written, but most impressive are the borders, each of which is a unique variation on the formal theme. A pencil notation on the flyleaf and on the verso of the last leaf of Thomson's life attribute the manuscript to George MacKay.
