Lot Essay

Thomas P. Hall was a London genre and historical painter who exhibited a number of works at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists and British Institution. His subjects often derived from 18th Century literary classics such as Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield. The Cavalier and the Puritan takes a teasing glance at English history, envisaging a cavalier's attempts to seduce a Puritan serving girl.
