Henry Andrews was a London genre and historical painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1830 and 1858. He became best known for his imitations and adaptions of Watteau and the present pair of pictures are very decorative examples of this. In Redgrave's A Dictionary of Artists of the British School 1878 he suggests that 'he [Andrews] fell into the hands of unscrupulous dealers' and his work was passed off as Watteau.
