Lot Essay

Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard, maître probably in 1717 or Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard, maître in 1752.

Stamped 'Tilliard', these elegant marquises are very grand examples of the oeuvre of Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard (1686-1766) or of his son Jean-Baptiste II Tilliard (1723-1798), who continued to share the same atelier and used the same stamp. Belonging to one of the most celebrated family of menuisiers, they worked for an illustrious clientèle including the Prince de Soubise, the Duchesse de Parme and the Duchesse de Mazarin. Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard was appointed maître-menuisier du Garde-Meuble du Roi in 1728 and his son succeeded him in 1766.
