Lot Essay

Most of Jennings's collages date back to 1934 to 1936. The fantasmatic link between fire (flames in a fireplace) and woman (especially nude) is quite a familiar theme in his collages and photographs, open to many associations of ideas related to the theme of passion and eroticism. In this collage, the gap between the two images and the subsequent precipitation of the two images against, and into, each other, intensify the powerful erotic tension inherent in the waiting before the act.
