Lot Essay

This table top is made from a single plank of Plane and shows areas of the fine medullary ray beneath the top which this wood has when cut on the quarter and for which the term 'Lacewood' is used. This cut is more usually used for decorative cabinet work, coachbuilding or piano making, so this table top represents a remarkable use for this wood in furniture. Plane is almost always grown as an ornamental tree in Wales, but will survive in woodland as in the rookery at Dynevor Castle where specimens grow to one hundred feet tall and ten feet in girth or, at Cathays Park, Cardiff where trees one hundred feet in height and nine feet in girth were recorded in 1932. The tree from which this top was cut would have been a magnificent specimen of perhaps a hundred years of age or more,
