Vigorously painted in the interior in inky tones of underglaze blue with a central medallion of breaking waves, the motif repeated on the exterior above the slightly incurved foot painted in underglaze blue

Lot Essay

A slightly smaller dish (15.3 cm. diam.) dated to the Zhengtong period painted with crashing waves on the center of the interior and on the exterior, but with a chevron band encircling the rim on the interior, is illustrated in Imperial Porcelain: Recent Discoveries of Jingdezhen Ware, Osaka, 1995, no. 86.
