One side stained red, the other natural, the kings with Maltese crosses, the queens with feathered finials
The king -- 4½in. (11.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2 1/8in. (5.3cm.) high

Lot Essay

Michael Mark, BRITISH CHESS SETS, 2nd Edition 1996, fig. 16 & 16a. This design with its distinctive ribbed baluster body and the Maltese cross surmounting the kings, appeared from the late 1840's in the William Lund workshop. It continued to be used in the Jaques pattern book during the 1870's.
