ATTRIBUTED TO THE JOHN CALVERT WORKSHOP, SECOND HALF 19TH CENTURY
One side stained red, the other natural, the kings and queens with pierced petal collars
The king -- 3½in. (9cm.) high; the pawn -- 1¾in. ( 4.5cm.) high

Lot Essay

This pattern is often attibuted to John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners, established from circa 1795 until the mid 1800's. See Gareth Williams,Master Pieces, Apple Press, 2000, page 47.
