Lot Essay

The term 'Spanish Pulpit' has evolved to described this type of set, the origins of which remain a mystery, although its now thought that these sets are British. Recent research by Alan Dewey indicates some examples were carved by Bertram Jones (see footnote for lot 38). See Michael Mark, Chessmen Practical and Ornamental, 1986, Apsrey plc, fig. 34. For a closely related set see The Ernst Boehlen Chess Collection, Phillips, London, November 1998, lot 79.
