Lot Essay

These sets are generally attributed to Archangel, located on the White Sea coast, as an important trading city in Russia's far north and, in particular, a centre of walrus ivory trade. Mark illustrates a similar late 18th or early 19th century bone example, which also retains an old manuscript note stating it was made in Archangel. See British Chess Sets 1700-1950, Exhibition catalogue, published by Asprey and Chess Collectors International, May 1986, fig. 31.
