PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF EDOUARD DES COURIÈRES Lots 204-217 Edouard des Courières (1896-1987) was born near Limoges, France, into a family that had been involved in the printing industry for more than four centuries. In 1914, aged 18, he volunteered to go to the Front and earned a military distinction for his contribution to the French Army. He was later made a Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. After the First World War, he took over the management of his late father's business interests. However, his real passion lay in collecting works of art and writing as an art critic. He published his first book dedicated to his friend, the painter Armand Guillaumin, in 1924. Other art books followed, including the first monograph on his artist friend Kees Van Dongen (1925), as well as studies of the works of the sculptors Pompon (1926) and Chana Orloff (1927). A life-long collector, in 1956 he donated a Medieval sculpture of Christ on the Cross to the Louvre Museum. His interest in all forms of art covered a wide span from the ancient to the contemporary, many of those contemporary artists being close friends. An article "Les Belles Demeures de Tanger", Revue Touristique du Maroc et de Tanger, Juillet 1957, no. 38, lists many of the antiquities seen in his house Dar El Hamra and were, therefore, collected prior to 1957. A dedication in a book of the sculptor, Marcel Gimond, reads: "A Monsieur des C., qui est un des rares 'honnêtes hommes' de notre temps".
