Lot Essay

If Peploe was inspired by Iona's structure of rocks, sand, sea, mountains and sky, Cadell saw these primarily in terms of pure colour. His paintings of the island use a palette of bright greens, pinks, blues and mauve purples, here with touches of yellow, to capture the light. Peploe and Cadell both conveyed the particular atmosphere but each responded to the landscape and its atmosphere in a highly personal way. For Cadell the cloud formation and shadow over the water are as important as the foreground island.
