Lot Essay

St. Palais is a seaside resort close to Royan. Fergusson visited the town whilst staying at Royan with the Peploe's in 1910 and 1911 and executed many pencil and pastel sketches of the resort. The present work with its bold colours and strongly outlined forms is typical of the technique the artist had adopted at this time.
