Lot Essay

Penn wrote: 'Colette spoke passionately of sight, sound, smell, taste, and especially love....She was eighty when [this picture] was taken, some time after she was permanently confined to bed. One foot of the cameraman's tripod stood on the sheet between Colette's immobilized feet, immaculately pedicured with the nails lacquered scarlet.' (Moments Preserved, p.22)
