Lot Essay

The photographer has stamped and annotated the reverse of the mount stating 'signed, silver prints of this negative not exceeding 31.'

Penn wrote: 'Père Couturier's ascetic head and severe unbending figure made a curiously familiar sight in fashionable Paris salons....A member of the Dominican order, he posed for the sketches of St. Dominic in the Matisse chapel at Vence. For this portrait, he posed in the dark basement of a Paris convent.' (Moments Preserved, p.29)
