The famous firm of cabinet-makers,founded around 1730 by Robert Gillow in his native Lancaster are renowned for the remarkable quantity and quality of the furniture that they made when the firm was in its heyday in the Regency period. Although the Gillow family departed the business in 1813, it continued to prosper and to trade under its original name. At the end of the 19th century the firm merged with S.J.Waring & Sons. Gillows began the practice of stamping their pieces from 1789-1790 and Susan Stuart has discussed this in detail in her article 'Gillows Marks,Labels and Stamps 1770-1960',Regional Furniture, 1998. At times a number of different stamps were used contemporaneously, but between 1870 and 1899 the firm began to stamp a series of numbers prefixed by the letter 'L'. These numbers have been linked to the 'Making' or 'Work' numbers found in the Estimate Sketch Book and refer, therefore, to the date of the design and not necessarily the date of manufacture, but pieces bearing these numbers have been dated according to these 'Work' numbers.
