Lot Essay

Gillows supplied a closely related 'Albuera wood Card table on carved claws' in August 1826 for £11.17.8 3/4'. The sketch is illustrated in their Estimate Sketch Book for that year,no.3565 (now in the Westminster City Library).
The card table is made of Goncalo Alvez, a wood that has been given a number of different names in the past.In the mid 18th century it has been referred to as Zebrawood,Gillows called it albuera wood and Morel and Hughes aburra wood.
The design in the Sketch Book is in the name of 'Ferguson & Co'.In 1813 the Gillow family left the business which was taken over by the partners Redmayne,Whiteside and Ferguson and after this date many of the designs appear under the 'Ferguson & Co' heading.
The workman listed for the table in the Sketchbook is P.Fearnley.
