Lot Essay

In 1964 Piper produced A Retrospect of Churches, a portfolio consisting of 25 stone lithographs of churches. Piper did not confine himself to any one style of architecture and the images span a range from simple naves of country chapels to sumptuous town churches. St James the Less, Westminster by William Butterfield is plate XXIII in the portfolio.
