Lot Essay

In the late 1980s and early 1990s Frink's drawing developed a new bold style of draughtsmanship. The present work emphasises the austere monumentality of the horses's head by reducing the palette to the tonal range of white against black and the vertical line creates a hypnotic mirror-image effect. This style of drawing led her to explore print making, particularly screen printing which responded well to the emphasis on blocked areas of colour. A screenprint in two colours Grey Horse Head was made in 1990, catalogue number 156.
