Between 1978 and 1980 Frink was working on a series of rolling horses, both in bronze and on paper. Her drawings and watercolours of horses, executed on large sheets of paper, show her interest in how the animals behave when not associated with humans and captures their strange mixture of awkwardness and grace when resting or at play (see E. Lucie-Smith, Elisabeth Frink Sculpture since 1984 and Drawings, London, 1994, p. 145).
