Lot Essay

The iron screw steam yacht Dotterel was designed and built by Ramage & Ferguson at Leith in 1887. Registered at 165 tons gross (112 net), she measured 119½ feet in length with a 20 foot beam and was powered by one of her builder's own 3-cylinder engines. After many years with her original owner, by 1908 she had become the property of Sir Richard Garton of Lythe Hill, Haslemere, Surrey. Consistently rated 100A1 by Lloyd's Surveyors, her size and obvious reliability made her an ideal candidate for war service and she was hired as a tender on 20th April 1918. Renamed Dotter, she was subsequently purchased by the Admiralty in 1919 although she disappears from record after she was disposed of in June 1922.
