LAST SUPPER, historiated initial S cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[Paris, early 16th century]
173 x 135mm overall. Christ and His disciples seated around a table in a colonnaded loggia, four onlookers in the foreground seated on a bench either side of the blue initial staves, one holding a bag, presumably containing 30 pieces of silver (pasted down, small pigment losses, some repaint to the blue robe of the foreground figure and in the sky). Framed.

This initial doubtless belongs among the large number of dispersed initials that originated in a series of luxurious choirbooks made in Paris at the beginning of the 16th century. They were intended for use in royal chapels and monasteries, including the chapel of Louis XII and his queen Anne of Brittany and the royal abbey of St Victoire in Paris. The present initial with its heavy-featured faces recalls the work of followers of Jean Pichore who served the Parisian booktrade by illustrating both manuscripts and printed books. It is particularly close to the image of St Victor, from the Gradual from the Abbey of St Victoire that was lot 25 at Sotheby's 23 June 1992.
