WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900). Autograph letter signed ('Oscar Wilde') to 'Stuart' [?Merrill, the young American poet], The Cottage, Goring-on-Thames, n.d. [June 1893], four pages, 8vo, bifolium (light soiling, repairs to wear at vertical fold, abrasion to first leaf, not affecting text).
OSCAR ON HOLIDAY AND 'PLANNING A COMEDY'. Wilde apologises for not being in town, but he is 'by the river -- divided in interest between paddling a canoe, and planning a comedy -- and finding that life in meadow and on stream is far more complex than is life in streets and salons'; he will let the recipient know if he comes to town, as is possible, for the royal wedding.
Merrill was the manager of the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre in Paris where Salomé was produced and was one of Wilde's circle in Paris. He was to draw up a petition for Wilde's release from prison (which most leading French writers refused to sign), but later affected not to see him and was classed by Wilde as one of 'those Parisians who licked my conqueror's boots only ten years ago'.
