WILDE, Oscar (1854-1900). Autograph letter signed ('Oscar Wilde') to an unidentified recipient, Albemarle Club, London, n.d. [c.15 March 1894], on paper with printed monogram of Albemarle Club, endorsed with date by recipient, four pages, 8vo, bifolium (window mounted).
WILDE'S DISLIKE OF 'CAVALIER ENGLISH'. Oscar thanks the recipient for sending 'so many useful copies of modern plays', and praises the qualities both of that series and of the edition de luxe of The Lily of the Field, though in more measured terms: 'the idea of the play and its last line are both very graceful -- I regret the use of "cavalier English" in the work, as it seems to me that cavalier English is an unnecessary and tedious thing making life very unreal -- but I dare say this is only a fancy of mine'; recommending George Alexander for the principal part.
The recipient may be Richard A. Neville Lynn, the playwright and editor of Lynn's Acting Editions, which included the one-act comedy The Lily of the Field by Charles Hannan.
