LAWRENCE, Thomas Edward (1888-1935). The Foundations of Arab Revolt. [S.l.: 1925]. 4° (255 x 195mm). Colour-printed collotype frontispiece, line illustration after Eric Kennington. (Very light offsetting, deckles a little dusty.) Original wrappers (darkened and marked). Second state, one of c. 100 copies. O'Brien A036. [With, loosely inserted:]
[T.E. LAWRENCE.] ['Notice to Subscribers', incipit:] 'My estimate of the time required ...'. [S.l.]: 1 June 1925. Broadsheet (255 x 187mm). (Margins slightly darkened.) O'Brien A037.
THE RARE SECOND STATE PROSPECTUS, TOGETHER WITH THE 'NOTICE TO SUBSCRIBERS'. The unillustrated first state of The Foundations of Arab Revolt was printed in an edition of c. 100 copies in 1924 and circulated to potential subscribers as a prospectus for the 'Subscriber's' edition of Seven Pillars of Wisdom; however, the printing of the 'Subscriber's' edition was delayed for a number of reasons, and a second issue of the prospectus was prepared, which omitted the introductory chapter of the first state, but added a frontispiece and line illustration, and contained the text of chapters I-VII. The second state was sent out together with the letterpress 'Notice to Subscribers' -- still present here -- which explains the reasons for the delay, states that half of the text is in type and that half of the plates are in block, anticipates the conclusion of printing in September 1925, and offers subscribers the opportunity to cancel their orders, should they wish to.
