A blue and white 'scholar's desk' writing stand, Xuande mark, Jiajing
of squat barrel shape, painted with a wide register of three bands of ruyi-heads, between a trellis pattern below and an ingot collar above, the domed top pierced with three circular and one rectangular apertures flanked by demi-flowerheads reserved on a trellis ground, all surrounding a central domed aperture with a cash pattern encircling floral lappets, underglaze-blue six-character Xuande mark within a double circle -- 5¼in. (13.3cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

This distinctive type of holder was made specifically for the benefit of the Ming literati class. The apertures were designed to contain brushes, water and ink cake.
