Lot Essay

Following the reopening of the Continent to English travellers after the signing of the Peace in 1816, Edridge made his first trip abroad in 1817, where he travelled to Normandy and Paris. This present watercolour dates from his second visit to France in 1819. He sketched in Rouen, Abbeville, Beauvais and in other areas of Normandy. The influence of Thomas Girtin, Edridge's fellow pupil at Dr Monro's Academy can be clearly seen in the present drawing.
