Lot Essay

According to a label on the reverse of the picture, this watercolour was no. 13 in an album of drawings by the artist completed while he was serving with the Mediterranean fleet, having joined the Navy in 1816. This drawing was included in the exhibition Sailing to Byzantium: Rediscovered Sketches of Greece and Turkey by Sir Henry Byam Martin, Michael Ward, New York, 1986, no. 2.
