Venice

Brangwyn first visited Venice in 1896 when he was twenty-eight. It was a trip that would inspire the young artist and leave a deep-seated affection for the city that he would continue to visit for almost three decades. He was stimulated by the architecture, the way of life and the city's history and executed numerous sketches that he would later translate into large paintings on his return to London. The measure of his prominence and esteem within the artistic community can be seen in his commission to design the British Room for the Venice Biennale both in 1905 and 1907.
