Lot Essay
Josua de Grave was a professional artist but like Valentin Klotz, with whom he is often confused (see lot 108), saw military service in the army of Stadholder-King William III of Orange, accompanying him on his campaigns against the French in the Southern Netherlands in 1672-76. Two other drawings of Louvain by de Grave, dated 18 July 1674, were formerly in the collection of Sir Robert Mond, while a third dated 23 July 1674 was offered at Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 9 October 1999, lot 104.
