Lot Essay

Similar in composition to Claude's Landcape with Saint John the Baptist (Liber Veritatis 97), after which no painting is known (M. Roethlisberger, Claude Lorrain, The Paintings, New York, 1979, II, fig. 178).
The inscription 'Occhiali' was the artist's nickname, probably first applied when he worked in Naples, referring to the fact that he wore glasses.
