Lot Essay

The vendor, who travelled to New York to be with his friend Julian Lennon shortly after John Lennon's murder on 8th December, 1980, was given this box by Yoko Ono. The boxes were ordered by John and Yoko from Cartier with the intention of sending to close friends and family for Christmas to commemorate the release of their latest album Double Fantasy. It is not known exactly how many boxes were made, but it is thought that Yoko sent out between 10 and 15 in November. Prior to his death, John had sent one of the boxes to his Aunt Mimi with a pearl necklace and brooch inside.
