RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY; THE ENCASED PANAGIARION OF THE 16TH CENTURY
Encased in the twenty-one cavities of the wooden panel are: the two sides of a carved, wooden panagiarion with silver-gilt covers, the obverse showing the Mother of God of the Sign and the reverse the Old Testament Trinity; a small wood carving with the scene of the Crucifixion; another woodcarving with the coronation of the Mother of God; seventeen relics of saints, including Savvas, Barbara, Mary of Egypt, John, Zosima, Laurus, Gregory and others, the names of all the saints inscribed above the star-shaped pierced areas of the silver-gilt oklad that reveal the relics, the border decorated with the bust figures of the respective saints, the background engraved with elaborated floral designs
