A COLLECTING BOX WITH THE KYKKOTISSA MOTHER OF GOD
CYPRIOT, LATE 18TH CENTURY
On the obverse showing the Mother of God, crowned, holding Christ, the latter wearing a knee-length chiton as is usually the case in the iconography of the Kykotissa, on the left side the equestrian St. Menas and at the right side archangel Michael, painted realistically, mostly with pastel colours, the top with a coin-slot, and a drawer that is pulled from the reverse

The realistic style of painting and the soft, bright modelling of the flesh, reflect the influence on the Cypriot icon painting of the Cretan artist Ioannes Cornaros, who was active on Cyprus during the last two decades of the 18th century. Cornaros worked in particular at the Monastery of Kykkos and he painted a number of icons with the image of the Kykkotissa. This lot can be attributed to an artist who followed Cornaros's style. Its small size suggests that it was used in a private chapel or that it was placed in front of an individual icon.
