RUSSIAN, 16TH CENTURY
Christ seated in an upright manner on the veiled hands of Simeon, the Mother of God and Joseph standing opposite, the building at the right representing the Temple of Jerusalem, in the background the walls of the city, the scene framed by two strigilated columns that support an arch, a rosette in each corner, exquisitely carved and painted with red, deep greenish-blue, brown and white
4¾ x 4 3/8 in. (12 x 11 cm)
This wooden carving, like the one in the next lot, could have been part of the decoration of a piece of furniture or casket that depicted a Christological cycle.
