Lot Essay

Born in Baccarat, France, Colotte is acknowledged as a master of glass sculpting and surface ornament. This vase is an important example of both cubist design and multiple surface-cutting techniques. Colotte purchased the 'blank' of colorless lead crystal from the Baccarat factory and then carved and chiseled the surface often under water, an unusual but necessary technique which protected his eyes and face from flying glass fragments.
