Lot Essay
The founding of the Grand Lodge of England, also known as 'The Grand Lodge of the Moderns' in 1717 marks the begining of craft freemasonry in England. In 1751 a schism occured within the Lodge, creating a second group, known as the 'Ancients', with its own rituals. It was not until 1813 that these two Lodges would reunite. For a bowl bearing the arms of the Grand Lodge of the Moderns, see David S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, vol. I, p. 333, pl. K3.
