Lot Essay

Herkomer was the son of a German wood-engraver who settled in England in 1857. He is best known as a painter of social realism, portraits, historical subjects and landscapes. He began his studies at South Kensington and became founder of the Bushey School of Art and its Director from 1883-1904. From 1885 to 1894 he was also Slade Professor. He was a member of the Royal Institute before moving to the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1890. He was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1890. In recognition of his achievements he was ennobled by the Kaiser and added 'von' to his name, and in 1904 he was knighted.
