Lot Essay
The original, on canvas, 210 x 177.5 cm, executed in 1656, is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Gemäldegalerie Kassel. It was acquired by Landgraf Wilhelm VIII of Hessen circa 1750. Between 1805 and 1815 it was taken to Paris (see A. Bredius revised by H. Gerson, Rembrandt The complete edition of the Paintings, 1969, p. 434, no. Br 525, with ill.).
Hermann Linde received his artistic training at the academies of Dresden and Weimar. From 1897 untill 1914 he was living in an artist's colony at Etzenhausen near Dachau. He was originally a genre painter but later specialised in landscapes (see H. Ludwig a.o., Münchner Maler im 19. Jahrhundert, 1982, II, pp. 57/58)
