etching with drypoint, Harris's state I i, an exceptionally rare working proof before letters and numbers (Harris records one other impression, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York), a fine impression, on laid paper, with wide margins, the number 19 in pen and ink in the upper right corner, the artist's name and a price (5/-) in pencil in the lower margin, a faint crease across the upper left sheet corner, minor soft creasing in the the lower right margin, scattered foxing, remains of old adhesive on the reverse at the upper sheet edge where previously mounted

Lot Essay

This work probably depicts a scene during the siege of Zaragoza when hand to hand fighting took place, and even alternate floors of buildings were held by opposing forces, the dead being thrown from windows into the streets below. However, there were countless similar horrors throughout Spain during this period.
