Lot Essay

The 'Union' service derives its name from the conjoined emblems of the United Kingdom- the shamrock, thistle and crowned rose- moulded on its handles. See Michael Messenger, Coalport, 1795-1926, Suffolk, 1995, p. 176 for a further discussion where Messenger notes that this service 'usually comprised the finest of Coalport painting from the 1820s'. Also see p. 176, pl. 127-129 for other illustrated examples from this service.
