Lot Essay

The finely inlaid marquetry panels of this commode, with their distinctive trompe l'oeil architectural scenes and sense of perspective accentuated by the angled bridge drawing one's eye into the picture, are related to the work of the Piedmontese intarsiatori Ignazio Ravelli (1756-1836) and his son Luigi (1776-1858). Commodes with similar panels attributed to Ravelli include one in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, whose central panel features an angled bridge isuing from arcading, similarly to the commode offered here (see A. González-Palacios, Il Gusto dei Principi, Milan, 1993, vol. II, p. 341, fig. 671).
