4o (247 x 191 mm). Original marbled wrappers (text loose); red cloth slipcase.

FIRST EDITION. After Bering's discoveries on the Northwest Coast there was great activity in the fur trade, especially by the Siberian fur hunters, who within two decades would found and conquer most of the Aleutian islands. By 1774, Robert de Vaugondy was able to compile good information about the region and published his Mémoire sur les pays... Buache's memoir responds to this, superimposing upon his map the maps of Engle and de Vaugondy for comparison. French cartographers were deeply concerned with the Russian discoveries at this time, and both the Delisles and Buache studied the existing maps and sought to improve upon them. Buache, Delisle's brother-in-law, attempts to justify both the Delisles's and Buache's description of the Northwest Coast, including Alaska. Sabin 8831; Wagner Northwest Coast 652; Wickersham 6672. VERY RARE.
