Lot Essay

Possibly from a set depicting the Five Senses and to be compared with the picture of the Sense of Hearing in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (see M. Klinge, Adriaen Brouwer David Teniers The Younger, exhibition catalogue Noortman & Brod, 1982, p. 15, fig. 6). This picture was engraved by Cornelis Visscher (op.cit., fig. 7), who added the motto 'Trahit sua quemque voluptas' ('everyone is carried away by his sensual desire') thus imbursing a moral message to the scene
