DIEPPE, 19TH CENTURY
The one side modelled as European monarchs versus the Africans, the bishops modelled in wide brimmed hats and turbans, the knights as horses' heads, the rooks as turrets, the pawns as soldiers, on baluster vase bases, one side stained red
The king -- 3 3/8in. (8.5cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high
